Sewing for Beginners

Explore the fundamentals of sewing in our beginner course, tailored for those new to the craft. From mastering the operation of a sewing machine to understanding basic sewing techniques, fabric and sewing pattern selection, this class introduces you to the world of sewing. This course is a perfect starting point for your sewing journey.

*You can enrol into Sewing plus more after the completion of this course to work on your own project.

Week 1:

  • Learn about different machine parts- what they do and how they work
  • Machine set-up and adjusting thread tension (top and bobbin)
  • Understanding stitch capabilities of the machine, stitch length, edge finishing stitches etc.
  • Learn how to control speed, stopping and starting
  • Maintain, clean and oil your machine

Week 2:

  • Learn about different seams, and where to use them.
  • Explore Flat seam, an open seam, and a French seam.
  • Hem and seam finishes
  • Understand commercial sewing patterns and terminology on the pattern, including fabric selection (grains, naps and patterns), trims and notions required.

Fees

Course enrolment must be accompanied by a fee; we are unable to hold places for people or accept deposits on Lifestyle courses. Once enrolment is completed students will receive a course confirmation either in writing or by email.  This course confirmation constitutes a receipt.

Parking fees may apply at some venues.

Enrolment

To ensure resources are ready for you at the start of your course, we ask you ideally enrol at least one week before the course commences.

Confirmation

Please check your confirmation letter to ensure you have the correct time, date and location of your course as well as any necessary requirements. There is a room directory located at each venue directing you to your classroom. 

Bring With You

·         Your own sewing machine (and sewing machine manual)

·         Calico fabric (or similar) to practice sewing and seams

  • 1-2 reels coloured sewing thread
  • 1 pair of fabric cutting scissors
  • 1 pair of small thread clippers or an unpicker/seam ripper
  • Measuring tape
  • Notebook, ruler and pen

*Please make sure your sewing machine is in good working order prior to class.

Cancellation

All courses need a minimum number of students to run ("we try our hardest to get those"). If your course does not have enough students, it will be cancelled before the commencement and you will be informed.
